Stan began as a partnership between two legacy media companies, Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media, both astutely smelling epoch-shifting change in the air. In 2014, each invested $50 million into founding StreamCo, the start-up company that would manage the service. In 2018 Stan’s ownership structure became a whole lot simpler when Nine bought out Fairfax in its entirety. Frequently referred to as ‘Australia’s answer to Netflix’, Right from the start, Stan’s goal has been to deliver the best of international and local content for all tastes, with exclusive deals providing some very appealing offerings that you can’t stream elsewhere. Recently, Stan has also started producing original content – including No Activity, which has been successfully adapted into a popular US series (also on Stan) the Logie Award winning Bloom, and the acclaimed TV series adaptations of Wolf Creek and Romper Stomper. They have multiple new Aussie originals in the pipeline for the coming few years. Stan's wrangled a number of international partnerships that have seen it bring more than a few new release TV series to Australia. One of Stan's major agreements is with US network Showtime, encompassing programming such as Twin Peaks, Billions, and I'm Dying Up Here. Other "First on Stan" shows have included Better Call Saul, UnREAL, and new episodes of Sherlock. Stan offers three price tiers, all of which offer decent value, with prices ranging between $10 per month for the basic plan and $19 per month for the premium plan. The cheapest allows for standard definition streaming and offline viewing on a single screen and costs $10. For $14 you can stream in high definition on three screens simultaneously, with three devices allowed to download content for offline viewing. Finally, for $19 you can stream on four screens in 4K, with offline downloads available for up to five devices. With usability, it’s often the little things that count the most. Stan has a nice indicator that shows you which episodes of a series you have watched, as well as how far into each episode you’ve watched. Autoplay of consecutive episodes is available too, making usage very seamless. Stan Sport is a new add-on, that as the name suggests, adds sport to Stan. Stan Sport will cost you an extra $10 per month on top of your current Stan subscription and will give you access to all things Rugby live, and on demand. Stan’s library is undoubtedly impressive. Although it produces few original series and movies in-house, Stan invests heavily in exclusive Australian streaming rights, with licensed prestige television forming a key part of the catalogue. Stan’s $10 entry price point offers great value for money, and at that price, it’s definitely worth a trial. Speaking of trials, Stan has a 30-day trial so you can see for yourself. Signing up for this trial is a no-brainer and takes less than a minute. Make sure you are on a low cost or unlimited broadband plan though. If you plan to watch a lot of streaming TV, the data could add up quickly.
